It’s Friday and the Sophies are officially reunited!
SoRo is still dreaming of Sicilian lemons and SoMo is still fuelled mostly by New Mexican mezcal and green chillies. This week’s episode is essentially the audio equivalent of a post-holiday slide night!
SoRo’s Sicilian Recommendations from the episode:
Eat almond everything! Specifically get the almond granita or almond gelato with brioche at Caffe Sicilia in Noto.
Occhipinti SP68 Bianco if you want to drink wine that tastes like white peaches and sea salt (and who doesn’t?) Keep an eye out for it at The Oak Barrel or Annandale Cellars. (SoMo’s favourite Sicilian drop - COS Rami - can be found online here.)
Visit Trattoria ai Normani in Palermo. Sardine and saffron pasta ahoy!
Make all your friends jealous by going for swims in Calamosche and Cefalù.
Taverna Azzurra in Palermo for drinking in laneways and reaaaaallly feeling the difference between Australia and Europe.
Get Magazinni'd (and show us what you bought if you do).
BONUS RECS:
Before you make the walk to Calamosche, stop in at Agriturismo Calamosche near the parking area and have a leisurely lunch under the olive trees. The scampi and prawn pasta is the clear winner.
The wine from the North Etna area is rightly famous. SoRo’s favourite was Vino di Anna’s Palmento Rosso. If you’re not in Sicily you can sometimes find it at DRNKS, The Oak Barrel and P&V Wine. Sign up for their newsletters and keep an eye out.
Vintage21 has no website, no signage and seemingly no logic to its opening hours, but it did have a perfect, dark green, silk blouse that SoRo bought for under 30 euros and an owner who will tell you that you look ‘bella’.
SoRo didn’t eat at Viri Ku Ce, a seafood restaurant on the south coast of Sicily in Scoglitti, but based on the story her friends Sheree and Kyle told her she really wishes she did.
Look, this isn’t an official recommendation because THIS IS NOT REAL LIFE, but here’s the incredible Don Arcangelo all'Olmo villa for your perusal. Jaw. Dropping.
SoMo’s Santa Fe Recommendations from the episode:
El Rey Court for Instagrammable architecture and La Reina - the mezcal-serving hotel bar of your dreams.
Paloma restaurant for elevated New Mexican food and the best Blood Orange and Black Salt margarita SoMo has ever tried. Actually it’s the only one she’s ever tried but it’s still great, ok?
Izanami at 10,000 Waves spa for when you’re sick of Mexican food and feel like grilled things on sticks. Plan to spend some time in the various baths there and report back for us!
Visit the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rock Monument, which is “Like the moon, if the moon was pointy.” I mean what more do you want, mates?
Meow Wolf - Finish three of those Blood Orange Margaritas and then make your way here. Open a fridge door - end up inside a spaceship!
Kelly Moore Art - Visit Kelly at the Dark Bird Palace and get your own, odd little piece of Santa Fe art to take home with you.
BONUS RECS:
Make like SoMo and strengthen your creative skills at one of the courses on offer at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, (and then spend the weekend at the El Rey Court because you know what’s up).
Grab some green chilli enchiladas and a Marg at The Shed, Santa Fe for New Mexican food that’s not modern at all, but still awesome. Decide once and for all if you’re a red chilli or a green chilli person.
Dig around at Double Take Vintage for cowboy boots and other South-Western classics. SoMo found herself a super cool, wine-coloured, thick denim shirt here, and NEARLY some cowboy boots.
Make your whole house smell like the New Mexico desert, by stocking up at Incensio de Santa Fe, you can find it everywhere.
Specialty coffee? The best in town is at Ikonic Coffee Roasters, trust me I tried them all.
Send this to someone who is visiting these spots, or just likes holidays as much as we do! See ya next week.
