Highly Enthused is a newsletter, once a podcast, concerning all the best things to consume in life. It’s written twice per month by Sophie McComas-Williams and Sophie Roberts, and today’s dispatch is written by SoMo! The majority of each newsletter is free, but there are five extra recs in each for paid subscribers. That’s often where the gold nuggets lie. Thanks for being here!
This is gonna be short and sweet, because this has not been a fun nor sexy week! I’ve started catching the bus to work and I blame it for the horrendous virus I’ve shivered through this week. Hectic body aches, throat like knives, I cried as soon as I woke up this morning when my husband said he was going to the gym, I simply could not do the morning breakfast/daycare routine without him or even at all. I UberEats’d the above apple, carrot and ginger juice basically direct to my bed yesterday but kind of regretted the ginger/raw throat combo.
Anyway, we’re heading down to the Great Ocean Road for a week tomorrow, just what the doctor ordered (besides bed rest and a Neurofen/Panadol one-two punch). Hope you’re all well, thanks so much for the epic response to our little audio update recently! You’ve totally inspired us to do more, next time we’ll work the mic out properly.
We took ourselves out to a pre-Valentine’s Day lunch last week to the very fresh Bessie’s and not only was the room BEAUTIFUL! ALL THAT BLONDE WOOD! But the aroma of the wood grill pleasantly warms your nose as you walk in, the most delicious scent. If you love Bar Copains, of course you do, and you remember the menu at Nomad when chef Nathan Sasi was working there right when it very opened, then you’ll love it here, friends. We started with a bright little bowl of what looks like pumpkin soup and cream, but is gazpacho with a little stracciatella. God I love gazpacho season. February is the perfect time to eat it, when the tomatoes are at PEAK and it’s to hot for any other soup. The pippies were fabulous also, as was the wagyu tongue skewer with very hot mustard. Tick tick tick.
In full spirit of the ‘90s, I’ve been watching all of the Bridget Jones movies available to me before seeing the latest one, and the algorithm clearly knows what’s up because it served me this video of perhaps the best dinner party theme ever?
used to throw the best dress-up parties in our share-house era, the best one was Baz Luhrmann themed, and , dressed as Juliet of Romeo + Juliet, continually drenched herself every hour to remain soaked throughout the party and in complete character out of this scene. Genius. Consider this my campaign for MORE costume in 2025. I think I’d have to go as karaoke Bridget, don’t you think?Ok I’m not here to de-influence you from buying a Walking Pad because I love it! Sickness has meant it hasn’t got the best workout lately but I love propping my laptop up on the make-shift standing desk shelf while working from home and walking 3-4km in an hour while emailing, or watching The Sopranos season 4 at night. Since going back to work my activity levels have dropped SIGNIFICANTLY and so this truly was the only way to move consistently again. And it was only $200-something bucks? I’ve paid more for a haircut, way more. It will fit under your bed or couch or maybe even in a cupboard if you have a deep-ish one, it’s very close to the ground and easy to operate. Honestly if you’re trying to get your steps up but are quite house-bound or WFH, get into it. Nice how you can see how chaotic my house is looking in that pic above. Gorgeous.
A quick-fire rundown of the miscellaneous finds we’ve loved this month. In this edition: A new lunchtime obsession, a sheer and pink lingerie set, a podcast interview, crispy fried snapper and a chic and handy Amazon lighting find.
