A Day In The Life, Full of Links
Come with SoMo as we buy and eat and do heaps of stuff in one day.
Be warned, this is not a normal day, this is a day when our son is in daycare, and I have a rare day off work to myself! Much more exciting to document than wake > tantrum > porridge > emails > sleep. If you’d like more of a work-focused rundown, let me know!
6am - Our toddler has recently begun to start our days by climbing out of his cot and prying open my eyelid to say good morning. He snuggles in between us for a restless minute before we let him watch Interstellar Ella for then 500th time.
7am - I’ve been stewing lots of rhubarb lately to top our porridge. I add a stalk of rosemary while it poaches on the stove to give it a little something *extra*, plus a good glug of maple syrup for sweetness. Anyone else find themselves starving 2 hours after porridge? I’m sure you’ll say I need to add a nut butter and I’m sure you’re right.
8am - My husband drops our son to daycare round the corner while I head to training. It’s hard to fit in more than this but I’ve been making time for a weekly weights training class with a friend each Friday at Primal NRG (an extremely masculine gym in St Peters) and I now have muscles I didn’t know I needed, like in my lower back! We smash it out and our trainer only teases me a tiny bit about how much I whinge.
8.50am - We stop next door at Numero Uno coffee roasters for my new obsession - coconut iced espresso, which is essentially iced coconut water with a shot of coffee dropped in. It’s so refreshing, only the tiniest bit sweet and I tell myself it’s hydrating. I grab a little pot of their organic matcha powder too to make Rosie Meehan’s matcha and caramelised white chocolate cookies I spied on the In Bed Store journal this week. Elite.
9am - After a shower, I’ve added a few new steps to my skincare routine. I’ve begun using toner (this organic herbal one by Dr Alkaitis, recommended by my stunning facialist, Lucy at Luna) for the first time in my entire life, I feel like it balances everything out before the rest of the products are layered on. I’ve had some weird hormonal/inflamed patches on my cheeks recently so I’m combating that with the most soothing, gentle gel (also from Dr Alkaitis) and I feel like it’s already making a difference. LASTLY (before SPF), I layer on the thick, plumping Charlotte Tilbury Magic cream, which gives GLOW, gives HYDRATION, GIVES THE ILLUSION OF COLLAGEN. It’s a lot of layers, but I feel like each is doing something distinctly different. I also had my eyebrows tinted recently for the first time ever, deleting a step in my makeup routine. It took a sec to get used to them in the mirror, but me likey.
9.30am - I water all our indoor plants using a mix of this plant tonic which I swear makes it all grow twice as fast.
10am - We’re about to renovate our house and so I meet with our designer Sarah Watt of Studio Vista to go over the plans. I feel so lucky to have her help, and find the whole process exciting but overwhelming! Turn this weird tiled cottage into a paradise, please! Unfortunately this dream bath will have to remain in dream territory for now (and the next 30 years).
11.30am - After staring at the two depressingly blank squares of grass out the front of our place, I panic-order a pack of these bee-friendly mixed wildflower seeds. I figure I can throw them around the grass with abandon and create some sort of inner-city meadow while we decide what actually to do out there. Inspiration here helloooo.
12.30pm - My husband and I have found an ideal window to catch up, over lunch on Fridays. We head to Sang by Mabasa on Fitzroy Street in Surry Hills for bubbling kimchi jjigae and big juicy pork mandu. On the way there I listen to the Serial podcast The Retrievals. Absolute chills.
2pm - A good friend’s wedding is on the horizon, and the second I saw this dress I knew it was it for my outfit. It’s stretchy and flowy and gorg.
3pm - A package on the doorstep! I was influenced HARD by Kat Vel to buy a piece from the collection she collaborated on with Summery Copenhagen, a sunset hued sarong that’ll be practically all I’ll wear over a bikini in Fiji in a few weeks time. BRING IT.
4pm - Finally made those aforementioned cookies, man they are incredible. My biggest cookie trick is to take them out of the oven halfway through baking and BANG the baking sheet down twice to collapse the cookies, creating a “ripple” effect of crisp heaven. It’s explained much more eloquently in this recipe.
5pm - Daycare pick-up! My favourite part of the day, I love hearing about who he played with (“Freddie”), and on what (“the bikes! And we learned about teeth!”). We head to Banh Xeo Bar in Rosebery for the BEST Vietnamese - pork and prawn banh xeo panacake, grilled pork tongue skewers, pate and pickles crostini, bun bo hue, corn with kimchi butter, allll the good things.
6pm - it’s physically impossible to walk past Gelato Messina with a child and not be roped into a scoop. For me, Super Flan, for Ned, Hazelnut!
8pm - Trying to go to bed ostentatiously early these days, to fit in a few pages of a new book, the historically inspired The Reclamation.
Check back next month for SoRo’s link-fuelled rundown of a day in her life. Have a beautiful week!
